Manufactured Housing in Michigan

* Five Over 11,000 new manufactured homes
   were sold in Michigan in 1997.
* Approximately 70 percent of the new
   manufactured homes sold in Michigan are
   multi-section. The average size of a
   multi-section home is 1600 square feet.

* There are more than 720,000 Michigan
   residents who live in manufactured homes.
* 98 percent of all new manufactured homes
   sold in Michigan each year have shingled
   peak roofs and lap siding.

* Manufactured housing construction costs in
   dollars per square foot are about
   one-half that of site-built housing.
* There are currently 471 lenders involved with
   financing manufactured homes in Michigan.
* Nearly 28,000 Michigan home buyers
   elected to purchase a manufactured home in
   1996.  This represents an increase of 29
   percent over 1990. Of these buyers, 40
   percent purchased a new home, and 60
   percent bought an existing home.
* Approximately half of all new home buyers
   put their home on private property.  The
   other half place their home in a land-lease
   community.
* Each year, nearly 25 percent of new home
   buyers in Michigan choose a manufactured
   home.
* In rural Michigan, almost 80 percent of
   manufactured homes are on private sites. In
   urban areas, about 80 percent of
   manufactured homes are located in
   manufactured home communities.
